Columbo was the victim of a mysterious death at this very time and, in fact, died on Sep. 2, 1934. It is believed he was shot in a freak accident while visiting a photographer friend. Only 26, he was romantically involved with Carole Lombard and in consideration for the role of Ravenal in Show Boat.
