by Antonio Vanegas Arroyo; Vicente A. Gallicia; Pedro Martinez
Good Condition. 66 letters, largely orders -- often quite detailed -- for various publications. The letters come from all over Mexico and a couple from the US -- AZ and TX -- with a number of repeat orders. Almost all including the original stamps and envelopes and marked "Paid" with a date. Letters date from 1897-1922 (with one later order from 1943) with the largest number, 49 letters, from late 1921 and early 1922 when Antonio Vanegas Arroyo's son Blas was running the business. They give a fascinating view of the business of what is probably the most important Mexican publisher of the late 19th and early 20th century. Some degradation, biopredation, modest moisture damage, but all generally legible and not lacking much sense.
Manuscript copy of "El Cura de Jalatlaco" a zarazuela in two acts with words by Vicente A. Galicia and music by Jose Austri with a manuscript and a printed title page dated 1892 (which was the date of the original performance - it was published by Vanegas Arroyo in 1895; 1 copy in OCLC at UC Berkeley). 87pages with another handwritten Obras de Vicente Gallicia page at the end. SIgned by Gallicia on page 87. Bound in pebbled brown cloth, wear at corners, splitting at spine, some edgewear to final pages in the margins.
Eight manuscript canciones signed by Pedro Martinez or P.M. on two bifolium. Date 9/21/13. Likely published by Arroyo, but no trace of them has been found. Often the canciones, corridos, and danzas weren't signed by the author when printed, so it is hard to know if these appeared or not. A few with some moisture damage and running of the ink, but not really affecting sense.
Seven page manuscript on two bifolium with a string binding of a Triduo a San Nicolas de Barri. Written in a fine script and signed by Antonio Vanega Arroyo and dated May 8, 1914 (stamped Mar 8, 1914 with a Casa Editoral de Antonio Vargas Arroyo stamp). Includes orations and other devotions for St. Nicolas' holy week. Last page with some biopredation affecting a few words.
