by [Seymour, Horatio
New York: Currier & Ives, 1868. Folio lithograph broadside, 12-1/2" x 17-1/2". Mild occasional spotting. Matted. Very Good.
"Satirical glimpse of Democratic party in chaos trying to find a candidate for president. Shown are: Brooks, Pendleton, Wood, Halpin, Hancock, Johnson, Seymour, Hoffman, Rynders, Bennett, Farragut, Chase" [AAS description]. In 1868, the first presidential election after the end of the War, the Democratic Party deliberately offered itself as "The White Man's Party."
Assorted would-be candidates and newspaper editors are identified, all looking to climb aboard the ship commanded by Admiral Farragut. Some politicians attempt to dig up George Pendleton from the grave, confident if they put boots on him, he will run. A bird appears overhead, probably Chief Justice Salmon Chase, perennial presidential hopeful.
Weitenkampf 158. OCLC 1136522573 [1- AAS] as of November 2024. Not in Reilly. (Inventory #: 40559)
