New York: Grosset & Dunlap. Good in Very Good- dj. [1925] (c.1923). 2nd printing (stated). Hardcover. [heavily shelfworn at bottom edge, light staining across bottom edge of front cover and on the spine; the jacket is also well-worn, with several old internal tape repairs, minor paper loss at front hinges, some abrasions on spine, but still presents well in new mylar]. (8 B&W film stills) INSCRIBED briefly and SIGNED by Jetta Goudal, star of the 1925 silent film based on this book. The story of an ambitious Jewish woman who marries her way out of the Lower East Side ghetto, but finds out that life with her WASP husband isn't exactly what she dreamed it would be. Inspired by the real-life story of activist Rose Pastor's romance with millionaire socialist Graham Stokes, the novel also draws upon the author's own unhappy experience as the lover of famed educator (and Columbia University professor) John Dewey. Yezierska's first novel, and the second (and last) of her works to reach the screen. Curiously, although she has much to say in her 1950 autobiographical novel, "Red Ribbon on a White Horse," about her experience in Hollywood in connection with "Hungry Hearts," a 1922 Goldwyn production based on her short stories, she is absolutely silent on the subject of the "Salome" film. The film starred the exotic Jetta Goudal (born Julie Henriette Goudeket), who may never have looked more gorgeous than on the cover of this book! (Also laid in to this copy is a Christmas card from Jetta Goudal and her husband, art director Harold Grieve.) Hanna 3927. . (Inventory #: 29097)
