First edition of the first appearance of the 13th Amendment in book form. Octavo (8 7/8 x 5 5/8 inches; 225 x 140 mm). 86 pp. With the full text of both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, a chart of the Declaration of Independence signors and three pages of facsimile signatures. The final page (p. 86) has been added since the previous printing to include the soon to be ratified 13th amendment. This 1865 printing marked the end of the Civil war and the abolishment of slavery in the United States. Pages printed within a double-ruled border.
Publisher's original elaborately blind-stamped brown cloth. Front board lettered in gilt. Edges speckled red. Previous owner's old ink signature on front flyleaf. Some rubbing to board edges and corners. Head and tail of the spine a bit chipped. Some minor toning to leaves. Still a very good copy, better than usually found.
The final page of this 1865 Civil War edition reads "Congress Having passed the following Amendment, when ratified by three-fourths of the several States, it will be valid as a part of this Constitution. Article XIII. Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."
