by [Menu – The Raymond (East Pasadena, Cal.)]
East Pasadena, Cal.; Boston: the hotel; [Robinson Eng. Co. 32 Hawley Street], 1890. Bi-fold menu (13 x 11.4 cm.), [4] pages. Printed in red and black. The printer information is from a small blind-stamp on the rear panel. An attractively designed menu for The Raymond, or Royal Raymond, the first manifestation of the first major resort hotel in the San Gabriel Valley, built in 1886, just four years before this menu was printed. Just four year later the grand hotel, a Victorian wooden structure with a shingle roof and eighty chimneys, burnt down on Easter Sunday, 1895. A new hotel was built on the spot, and over the years hosted guests including Teddy Roosevelt, Charlie Chaplin, and Nellie Melba. The menu includes fifty-one items, mostly staples of grand American hotel dining, but also some more unusual dishes, including Sea Moss Blancmange with Cream, Wafer Jumblies, and Layer Raisins. Printed on tan card stock, with a die-cut "deckled" edge. The front panel of the menu includes a tiny engraving of the hotel on its hill, printed in red. Fine.
