1910 · Portland, Maine
Portland, Maine: L. H. Nelson Company, 1910. 6”x9” softcover album of Richmond, VA by L.H. Nelson Company in Portland, Maine, c.1910. Lyman Nelson founded his souvenir company in 1898, later expanding as this album states to publishing “Souvenir Books and Pictures of Prominent Cities and Summer Resorts”. A dark blue cover with stylized gold title and 16 pages shows images on both front and back, with a short introduction about the founding and history of the city. Images include the standard Richmond landmarks taken from different sources. These include the “Boys with Banjo” image from the Valentine Museum’s Cook Photograph Collection – here titled “Way Down South in Dixie”, Fleming Hall in the Confederate Soldiers’ Home, and the “Captain John Smith Rock”, where the caption states his life was saved by Pocahontas, a short distance below Richmond. Very good condition – a small loss from the upper outer corner of the back cover.
