South Pasadena, CA: Ward Ritchie, 1933. Limited Edition. Wraps. Very Good. Alice Millard (1873-1938) was a rare book dealer when it was unusual for a woman to pursue that profession on her own, not as an assistant to a spouse, although that is how she began her career with her husband, George Millard upon their marriage in 1901. Millard was unique in that she commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design and build two houses for her, the first for the married couple, known as the George Millard House (1906) in Highland Park, Illinois; her second house was commissioned in Pasadena, California, after the death of her husband, and was christened La Miniatura (1923). Millard would run her rare book business from her house until her death. Exhibitions, like this one, were common in her business, although this was likely the most lavish of her exhibitions given the shear breadth of work that was presented. This publication was printed in an edition of 125 copies on March 11, 1923 by famed Southern California printer, Ward Ritchie (1905-1996). 60 pp. 8vo. Very light blue paper wraps with the printed title, "Order Touched With Delight" in black text on the cover. Interior printed with the occasional splash of red font where appropriate, including a drop-cap initial that begins Mrs. Millard's essay on Cobden-Sanderson that introduces the exhibition that contained 166 works by Cobden-Sanderson and the Dove's Press.
