[Judaica][Palestine][Middle East] Album of British Mandatory Palestine, c. 1930s-40s. 200 black-and-white photographic cigarette cards mounted in the original printed album, with Hebrew captions and descriptions. Folio. Original illustrated stiff wraps, string-bound. A rare cigarette card album produced by Dubek Cigarettes, chronicling the Zionist nation-building process in pre-state Palestine through images of agriculture, industry, security, and cultural life. Designed as both an educational and propagandistic tool, this album highlights the modernization of Jewish settlements and the infrastructure necessary for statehood. The album opens with images of women working in agriculture, reinforcing the role of the kibbutz movement and the ethos of labor Zionism. Women are shown harvesting crops, working in fisheries, and engaged in factory labor—depicting a society where collective work and self-sufficiency were central to Jewish identity in the Yishuv. This theme extends to additional images of industrialization, showcasing textile production, citrus exports, and cigarette manufacturing—industries that bolstered the economic foundation of early Jewish settlements.
Several sections document security and defense, including images of Jewish guards, early police units, and fortified settlements. These photographs align with the "Wall and Tower" (Homa U’Migdal) strategy, emphasizing rapid settlement construction in contested areas. The inclusion of Jewish defense units, patrols, and outpost fortifications reflects the increasing militarization of the Yishuv in response to regional tensions. Another key aspect of the album is its depiction of infrastructure development, including bridges, water towers, roads, and public buildings, demonstrating the transformation of Palestine into a functional modern state. These images emphasize the engineering and architectural advancements of the period, reinforcing the Zionist vision of a developed homeland. Cultural and educational institutions are also prominently featured, with images of public libraries, schools, and religious texts, illustrating the intellectual and spiritual aspirations of the Jewish population. The album includes scenes of national celebrations, parades, and youth activities, reinforcing the ideological emphasis on Jewish unity and identity formation.
Covers show moderate wear, with edge rubbing, toning, and some soiling. Interior pages exhibit mild foxing, but the photographs remain well-preserved, with strong contrast. Some cigarette cards are slightly lifting, but all appear present. Overall good condition. A significant visual record of Zionist efforts in Palestine, this album provides invaluable photographic evidence of settlement expansion, labor organization, and security preparations leading up to Israeli statehood. (Inventory #: 21345)
