by Wood, Charles Erskine Scott
Signed by Charles Erskine Scott Wood, this prose poem is printed on the letterhead of The Cats, his home in Las Gatos, California. Wood (1852–1944) was an author, civil liberties advocate, artist, soldier, and attorney, and is best known for his best-selling collection of satirical essays, Heavenly Discourse (1927). From 1925 until his death, Wood lived with his second wife, Sara Bard Field, on a 34-acre property in Los Gatos named "The Cats" or the "Cats Estate" with an entry way featuring a wrought iron gate flanked by two large white cat sculptures, named Leo and Leona. Many famous people visited this home, including Charlie Chaplin, Eleanor Roosevelt, and John Steinbeck. (Inventory #: 78044)
