Belasco was arguably the most important man of the theater in his day. He wrote, directed and produced countless plays, although today, in terms of the long list of credits on his resume, he is most remembered for the plays that directly inspired adaptations for two Puccini operas -- Madama Butterfly and Fanciulla del West. Belasco's more enduring impact was in his many innovations in stagecraft. He also played a key role in the early careers of many successful actors, among them, Mary Pickford, Mrs. xxx.
