Frontispiece portrait of Kate Sanborn. Light sunning to spine and minor stain on back cover. One gathering slightly loose. Clean throughout. Signed by the author, and includes a 3 pp. short handwritten note from her to a Mr. Bagby. Bagby is clearly a friend, and she includes information about a visit to family in Montclair, though he doesn't appear to be an intimate from. A very good copy. Arthur H. Palmer book plate laid in. Kate Sanborn (1839-1917) was an American writer and teacher. Born in New Hampshire, Sanborn was educated at home by her father who was a Latin professor. She was able to support herself through her writing by age 17. She taught English literature at Smith College, and later lectured in New York City at the Young Women's Christian Association and elsewhere. Her 1885 anthology, The Wit of Women, argued for women's sense of humor.
