Sparks of Cambridge, Massachusetts for her "kind recollection" of him, in a memoir. Brantz expresses interest in acquiring a copy of a portrait within, so that he may use it for a publication for the Maryland Historical Society, along with a copy of the memoir for the organization's library.
Brantz Mayer (1809-1879) founded the Maryland Historical Society in 1844, and was also an author, lawyer, and member of the American Antiquarian Society. He writes to Mary Crowninshield Sparks, wife of Jared Sparks (1789-1866), who was an American historian, educator, and Unitarian minister. Sparks also served as President of Harvard University (1849 -1853).
The memoir to which Mayer refers in his letter is George Ellis'"Memoir of Jared Sparks" (1869), reprinted from the Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society for May 1868. Brantz Mayer's own work, "Memoir of Jared Sparks" (1867), was prepared for the Maryland Historical Society. (Inventory #: 44863)
