first edition
1874
by Trollope, Anthony
1874. Holl, Frank. Illustrated. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1874. 2 pp preliminary ads + 4+4 pp terminal ads, undated. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt.
First American Edition of this "Palliser" novel that picks up where several previous ones left off. It is primarily a continuation of PHINEAS FINN, with Phineas returning to London after seven years of exile in Ireland and the death of his wife. But the Palliser family also figures in the plot, as it does in FRAMLEY PARSONAGE, DOCTOR THORNE and several other Trollope novels; so does Lizzie Eustace (and her new husband), fresh from her adventures in THE EUSTACE DIAMONDS. In England, PHINEAS REDUX was published in two volumes in December 1873; Harper was ready with this edition (in paper wrappers at $1.25 or in cloth at $1.75) on February 27, 1874. Included are all 26 illustrations that had appeared in the English serialization (of which only 24 appeared in the London book edition). This copy is in black cloth with a tight linen-grain (not specifically cited by Smith, unless it is his "dark greyish reddish brown"). Condition is very good-plus, perhaps near-fine (spine ends slightly worn, one small hole in the front joint). Smith 34; see Sadleir (Trollope) 41. (Inventory #: 15694)
