Peter Rabbit's Painting Book
POTTER, Beatrix. Peter Rabbit's Painting Book. New York: Frederick Warne & Co., [1911].
First American edition.
Small quarto (8 1/8 x 7 1/8 inches; 202 x 181 mm.). [48] pp. Twelve colored plates facing twelve identical outline illustrations printed in dark brown. Original green boards with colored illustrations on front and back covers. Pictorial endpapers. Extremities a little rubbed, the outline illustrations carefully and lightly colored in crayon by a child.
A perfectly acceptable copy of one of the rarest of the Beatrix Potter books.
"There is a copy of this book at the British Museum in its earliest form, with the 12 coloured plates and 12 outline pages. Later on it was reduced to 8 coloured plates and 8 outline pages to make it uniform with Tom Kitten's Painting Book, which was first published in 1917. The 12 coloured plates (each repeated in outline) and the text give give incidents from Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, Tom Kitten, Jemima Puddle-duck, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Squirrel Nutkin, and Two Bad Mice. Round each picture in this ideal little painting book the author has written in her inimitable style a story to amuse and delight the little ones." (Quinby).
Linder p. 431; Quinby 19. (Inventory #: 06107)
