Leather bound
1926 · East Wellesley, Massachusett
East Wellesley, Massachusett, 1926. Leather bound. Very good. This pre-printed, leather-bound automobile travel diary is titled The Log of the Automobile: Records and Observations by the Owner. Published in Boston by The Bookcraft Company, 1902. 5.5” x 8.25”. Approximately 300 unpaginated forms and blank pages. Includes about 15,000 words of manuscript in a readable hand. Yapped, limp sheep binding with lightly toned marbled end papers. Minor wear. In nice shape.
Includes entries for over twenty years of automobile excursions throughout Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania by a wealthy early auto fiend from East Wellesley, Massachusetts. The unnamed motorist was partial to Cadillacs, although his last purchase mentioned in the log was a 1926 Lincoln. Many of the trips were taken with his wife, alternately referred to as Bessie or Bettie.
Each entry includes the trips “Run Number,” beginning and ending location, time of departure and arrival, distance traveled, number of stops, actual running time, and the weather. All entries contain additional information and observations made about the trip including hotel stays, restaurants visited, and scenery. Several of the entries describe golf trips.
Notes from a sample trip, "Run Number 9" from Home to Hyannis and return read in part:
“Had beautiful trip down without accident. Held up by failure at Sandwich – Stop until July 4th at Mrs Eldridge, had nice time. . .. Followed coast to Plymouth stopping at Ardmore Inn near Plymouth for dinner. Stayed on beach after dinner until 3:30 then continued on up coast until reaching rocks on road near Nantucket where we remained to lunch, which we had finished while passing through Cohasset. Remained here until 7:00 P.M. taking slow beautiful drive home. [Later] received summons for assurance in Sandwich . . . $10.00. . ..” . A wonderful first-hand record of early American automobile travel. . (Inventory #: 010487)
