"What, at first sight, might seem to be a little remarkable, is, that while it is , at a certain time, assumed that slavery does not and cannot exist in England, the history of a thousand years shows that it was once an existing institution there; and no statute can be traced, abolishing or declaring it unlawful" (Washburn, [3]).
