1902. Furuya Ko^rin, editor. SHINBIJUTSUKAI 7 volumes.... Kyoto & Tokyo, Unso^do^... 23.9 x 16.2 cm. The complete inventory of design prints from the run of this important design magazine, edited by Furuya Ko^rin, one of the finest artists of the Kyoto Design Revival of late Meiji. He and many others contributed the 720 full page designs for this series, at a moment when he and his mentor, Kamisaka Sekka, were at the height of their powers. Printed by the masters at Unso^do^, a remarkable effort. This version of the SHINBIJUTSUKAI was printed some years after the original series began in 1902. It has been noted before that this version, without the text or original covers of the magazine, bound together in large volumes of 5 magazines each contain a toal of 720 prints. The paper is very good, the colophon indicates a prewar production and the printing quality with overprinting and metallic inks, is beautiful.... Interestingly, the BIJUTSUKAI reached 35 volumes in total after its first publication in 1902..... At 20 prints pervolume, the total should be 700 prints but there are an extra 20 prints in the last of the seven volumes of this compilation, indicating that there was a 36th volume planned but not published. In any event, a remarkable achievement in truly lovely printing and condition.
