Engraving of a temple's architectural details, designed by the Venetian Andreas Palladio (1508-1580), whose architecture is characterized by its symmetry and balance, influenced by the classical design of Ancient Greece and Rome.
Giacomo Leoni (1686-1746) was also an architect from Venice, though he worked for most of his life in England. Greatly inspired by Palladio's neo-classical restraint, Leoni sought to incorporate this simplicity of design with the prevailing Baroque trends of ornamentation. Leoni republished Palladio's "I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura" in English (circa 1715) which helped to popularize Palladio's style abroad.
