The "Grau" mass is one of Liszt's major works, composed for the consecration of the new basilica at Grau in his native Hungary. It was first performed, under Liszt's direction, on 31 August 1856, to an audience of approximately 4,000 people. "This music is religious to the point of converting Satan himself!"
