Mexico (Mexico City?), c.1810s. 160 pp. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5-3/4"). Contemporary laced vellum, remnants of thong ties to board edges. Light soiling to exterior, scratch across front board, which is slightly bowed, vellum beginning to crack through pastedowns, later paper reinforcement to hinges, undated owner initials J.Y.P. and owner names of Jose Ygnacio Pavon and Pedro Nolasco Larralde, along with later owner inscription (of Thomas O'Shea, dated 1912) to front free endpaper, additional owner name of Jose Ygnacio Pavon to rear free endpaper. Manuscript text in single neat hand through p. 133, additional content in a different hand to pp. 139-157. Light toning, light foxing and soiling to a few leaves, crack in text block between pp. 6-7, all leaves secure, internally clean. $850. * Likely compiled as a reference work, this manuscript covers a variety of topics related to trial procedure in Mexican law, including civil, criminal and military trials. It was probably produced at the Colegio de San Ildefonso in Mexico City, where Jose Ignacio Pavon and Pedro Nolasco Larralde were both students. Larralde studied there from 1802-1811, around the same time that Pavon was studying philosophy and law. We are not sure whether the manuscript was jointly compiled or passed from one to the other. The portion in a different hand appears to be roughly contemporary to the rest of the manuscript and notes relevant statutes (the last apparently dated 1807). Larralde obtained a bachiller en artes degree in 1811. Pavon went on to a career in politics and civil service before being appointed to the Mexican Supreme Court in 1841. In his capacity as president of the court, he served as interim president of Mexico for two days at the end of the War of Reform.
