first edition
1846
by Dickens, Charles
1846. Leech, John. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1846. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt, all page edges gilt.
First Edition of the third of Dickens's five Christmas books, actually published in December 1845. This is the tale about John Peerybingle and the fairy cricket that prevents him from becoming suspicious about his wife's sincerity. The illustrations are by John Leech, Richard Doyle, and to a lesser extent three others. This copy has the ad leaf in the first state, with the phrase "No. I of" at the end of the second line (rather than occupying a line all by itself); this is by far the scarcer of the two ad states. This copy is in very good-plus condition (volume a little askew, minor wear at the spine ends -- both as usual for this book; atypically, the delicate original endpapers are not cracked). In our experience THE CRICKET, of the four "other" Christmas books, is the one least often encountered, and has become quite scarce in the first state. In the corner of the front pastedown resides the small booklabel of this copy's initial seller, Simms & Dinham of Manchester. Smith II pp 37-43 (observing, "I have found the second state of the advertisement in all but a few copies of the first edition that I reviewed"). (Inventory #: 15713)
