One of 350 copies (plus 26 hors de commerce), quarto size, 171 pp., with order form and prospectus, signed by John Hawk. (Harold) Mallette Dean (1907-1975), an eminent printer and illustrator of the San Francisco Bay Area, was a well-known and highly-regarded San Francisco bay area printer and illustrator. Beginning his career in 1935 with the illustrious Grabhorn Press (for whom he worked for fifteen years), and later with the Allen Press, he eventually opened his own printing press in Fairfax, Marin County, and published his own books, most of which are adorned with his own illustrations. "A major fixture in the history of the fine press book in California, H. Mallette Dean...was a prolific artist whose career spanned several decades" (n.b., from prospectus).

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full rust-red Japanese bookcloth, illustrated cover label mounted into a debossed rectangle, spine label in black and red, mustard-yellow endpapers, illustrated title page in red and black, replete with reproductions of Dean's artwork, book cover designs, and illustrations; types FF Quadraat, Greco Adornado, and Copperplate Gothic, binding quarto size (11 1/8" by 7 5/8"), pagination: [1-7] 8-170 [1, colophon]; limited edition of 350 copies, this no. 31, signed by John Hawk at the colophon. In the publisher's plain white paper dust wrapper. With the original order form and prospectus, a single sheet folded once to four pages, with four reproductions of Dean's artwork.
___CONDITION: Volume fine, the boards clean, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; literally as new.
