Printed for Frederick and Bertha Goudy at the shop of William Edwin Rudge, by Thomas Hughes and Hugh Grannam, June, 1920. One of 110 copies. Bifolium (16 1/2 x 11 1/4 inches; 420 x 285 mm). , [4] pp. [1, colophon], [2-3, facsimile after Morris' trial pages for his projected 1897 edition of Froissart's Chronicles], [4, blank].
"It was the intention of Mr. Morris to make this edition of what was since his college days almost his favourite book, a worthy companion to the Chaucer. It was to have been in two volumes folio, with new cusped initials and heraldic ornament throughout . . . [and] a large frontispiece designed by Burne-Jones . . . Meanwhile the printing of the Chaucer had begun & it was not feasible to carry on two folios at the same time . . . Froissart again comes under the heading of `in Preparation' in the lists from Dec. 1. 1894 to June 1896. In the Prospectus for the Shepheardes Calendar, dated No. 12, 1896 it is announced as abandoned . . ."--Cockerell 46. Only sixteen of the pages were ever printed (and given to personal friends) before Morris's death. "A facsimile of these specimen pages was produced by Frederick Goudy, the American type-designer, in 1918." (Peterson A46).

Colophon reads "In commemoratoin of the centenary of the birth (March 24, 1834) of William Morris, 350 copies of this broadside have been printed, on dampened hand-made paper, by The Grabhorn Press for The Book Club of California, in March 1934, and are for distribution to members of the club."

Prospectus reads: "The pages overleaf have been selected from various sections of the Kelmscott Chaucer and are not consecutive. The Basilisk Press facsimile of this famous book will be presented with a companion volume of previously unpublished pencil drawings made for the work by Edward Burne-Jones."
All leaves housed in printed paper folders. Folders with some wear, but all facsimile leaves are fine.
