by MORRIS, WILLIAM
London: Printed at the Chiswick Press for Longmans & Co, 1899. FIRST EDITION. 210 x 140 mm. (8 1/4 x 5 1/2"). 1 p.l., 45 pp.
Publisher's linen-backed gray paper boards, printed title on upper cover. LARGELY UNOPENED. Slip with "Lynval Davidson's Book" calligraphed in red and black laid in at front. PMM 367b; LeMire A-94.01. Just a vague hint of soiling, offsetting from turn-ins onto free endpapers, but still quite a fine copy.
Printed in the Golden type designed by William Morris for the Kelmscott Press, this book, from an 1881 lecture delivered to the Working Men's College in London, is cited by "Printing and the Mind of Man" for vindicating Morris' claim that "good design should be extended to objects for use as well as objects of art." This copy is from the library of Lynval Davidson (1887-1964), whose notable collection of private press books was sold in two parts by Parke-Bernet in 1969.. (Inventory #: ST20234-07)
