An ambitious and deeply researched study contrasting the nature of West African expressions of Vodoun, especially in the form of figurative and ritual artworks, and focussing on the cultures of Benin and Togo, with the artistic and ritual cultures of Haiti and The Caribbean. At the time of publication this was the first major academic study of its kind, and certainly one of the earliest to investigate the phenomenon on an art historical, and psychological footing.
