by MATTHIESSEN, Peter
New York: The Modern Library, 2008. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (21cm); grey cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine, and publisher's logo embossed onto front cover; pictorial endpapers; dustjacket; xviii,[3]-892,892,[2]pp. Signed by the author on the title page. Base of spine gently nudged, else Fine in a Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped (priced $40.00), showing light wear to extremities. Matthiessen's masterfully-written novel centered around Florida sugar planter and notorious outlaw E.J. Watson. Due to the length, his publisher originally published this as three separate novels – Killing Mister Watson, Lost Man's River, and Bone By Bone; in this new rendering, the author has trimmed nearly a third of it's original length, and extensively re-written portions of character narrative throughout. Winner of the National Book Award for Fiction in 2008. (Inventory #: 85181)
