In 1873, with the assistance of Vader, Linsday contrived a plan to murder Colvin and steal his money, a nest egg of about $3,000 that he always kept with him. Linsday fatally struck Colvin in the back of his head with an axe, then he and Vader sunk Colvin's body in the Seneca River and told people afterwards that Colvin left town to live in Syracuse. The crime was detected when the body was discovered two years later. Vader confessed in exchange for testimony and the charges against him were dropped. Linsday was convicted and hanged.
