[various places, 1910. A collection of material from two different detective agencies, Pinkerton's National Detective Agency, and J.C. Grannan's Detective Bureau. The items include:
1) ADAM WORTH, ALIAS "LITTLE ADAM." Theft and Recovery of Gainsborough's "Duchess of Devonshire." [From the Archives of Pinkerton's National Detective Agency.] NY: Nov. 1902. Black lettered grey paper wrappers, stapled. 17 cm. (12), 23 pp. Photographic portraits. Very good.
2) THE "YEGGMAN" BANK VAULT AND SAFE BURGLAR OF TO-DAY.. Paper read by William A. Pinkerton. Annual Convention International Association Chiefs of Police, St. Louis, MO., June 6th, to June 11th, 1904. NP: nd [1904]. Black lettered tan paper wrappers, stapled. 17 cm. (6) 34 pp. Photographic portraits. "Compliments of Wm. A. Pinkerton" in ink at head of front wrapper [secretarial?]. Very good.
3) "FORGERY." Paper read by William A. Pinkerton. Annual Convention International Association Chiefs of Police, Washington, D.C., May 22nd, 1905. Compliments of William A. Pinkerton, Chicago; Robert A. Pinkerton, New York. NP: August, 1905. Black lettered grey paper wrappers, stapled (some fading along spine edge). 17 cm. 44, (1) pp. Photographic portraits. Very good.
4) BANK "SNEAK"... THIEVES. Paper read by William A. Pinkerton. Annual Convention International Association Chiefs of Police, Hot Springs, Ark., April 11th, 1906. NP: Nov. 1906. Black lettered grey paper wrappers, stapled. 17 cm. 52, (1) pp. Photographic portraits. Very good.
5) [Broadside] PINKERTON'S NATIONAL DETECTIVE AGENCY.... $10,000 REWARD. Cleveland, Ohio: August 9th, 1910. Single sheet, 28 x 21 cm. Upper third of the sheet prints the offices and addresses of the Pinkerton agencies across the country, followed by six paragraphs of text offering a reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the murderer or murderers of William L. Rice, "shot and killed near his residence on Euclid Heights, Cleveland, Ohio, about 10:40 p.m on August 5, 1910." Old fold lines, else very good.
6) [Reproduced typescript on letterhead] Single sheet, 27 cm. A one-page reproduced typescript of a letter from The Grannan Detective Bureau, Cincinnati, O., Dec. 11, 1905, to Mr. J.A. Groelli, Logan, Utah. Responding to a request from Groelli regarding information about the Bureau, and forwarding "our book of particulars and other information..." as well as two blank forms, A and B, applications to become one of the agency's representatives.
7) Grannan, J.C. THE GRANNAN DETECTIVE BUREAU AND SCHOOL FOR THE INSTRUCTION OF DETECTIVES, established in 1879. Cincinnati, Ohio: 1905. Light blue paper wrappers, stapled. 16 cm. 54 pp. Unevenly faded, else very good.
8) Two blank forms, A and B. Single sheets, each 17 x 22 cm., creased from folding, unused. Cincinnati, OH: 190_. Applications for membership in the Grannan Detective Bureau. Form A requests the company's book of instructions, plus any circulars, notices or printed matter published for members, and copies of the "International Detective," all for the subscription price of $3. Form B adds the publication "Grannan's Pocket Gallery of Noted Criminals," for the subscription price of $5.
9) Two blank forms, A and B, as above, also unused. These forms both stamped across their text with a rubber stamped "Special Proposition" offering discounts on the subscription rates for a prompt response.
10) [Newspaper] THE INTERNATIONAL DETECTIVE. Vol. XVIII, No. 8. Cincinnati, O., Sept. 30, 1905. This issue only. 36 x 25 cm., stapled, 16 pp. Photographic portraits and ads. Old fold lines, some edge wear.
11) [Reproduced typescript on letterhead] Single sheet, 27 cm. A one-page reproduced typescript of a letter from The Grannan Detective Bureau, Cincinnati, O., Jan. 6, 1906, to Mr. J.A. Groelli, Logan, Utah. Noting they have not heard from him, and requesting that Mr. Groelli respond regarding his interest in becoming a member of the agency. Accompanied by a stamped, addressed envelope, and an unused return envelope. (Inventory #: 70154)
