J. D. SALINGER: A WRITING LIFE (Advance Proofs, Uncorrected)

NY: Random House, 1986. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Good. An uncommon Advance Proof (Uncorrected) copy of the book that Salinger successfully prevented from being published. Random House intended to publish the book on August 29, 1986 (as noted on the pasted-on sheet on the advance copy). Salinger objected to Hamilton's quoting from excerpts of Salinger's correspondence in Princeton archives. Salinger failed in his initial court proceeding but the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reversed the earlier judgment in January 1987. Determined, Hamilton rewrote the biography, leaving out the material Salinger objected to and Random House published the revised book, "In Search of J.D. Salinger", in 1988. This advance copy has soiled covers, and there is a small stack of newspaper clippings about the conflict and a Hamilton obit laid-in which has caused some discoloration to the half title. Sold with a first edition copy in chipped dustjacket of Hamilton's second version. By best accounts only 65 copies of this advance proof were printed; it is unknown to how many Random House added the taped down notice on the front cover. (Inventory #: 013699)
