Interesting compilation of summaries for eight conferences on viticulture that took place in Florence during the 1860’s. The annual conferences tackled such topics as new methods for planting and care for vines; managing the quality of wine production based on annual yields; the use of proper utensils and equipment to ensure that wine is properly stored and maintained; the use of chemicals to stabilize the wine for storage and transportation. The final chapter deals with the first prize award given to best wine for the year 1867 in the Comune of Alexandria.
Francesco De Blasiis (1807-1873) was the Minister of Agriculture to the new administration in Naples after unification. He was a patriot that was exiled to Tuscany with the restoration of the Bourbons in the 1859’s and became interested in viticulture during his time there. He was the author of books on the cultivation of grapes, methods of preserving the fruit from blight and pests, and an essay on machinery used in the harvesting of grapes. He was made president of the Committee of Agriculture in Florence during his stay in Tuscany and presided over eight conference which are described in this publication.
