1890 · Munchen
by Meggendorfer (Lothar, illustrator)
Munchen: Braun & Schneider, 1890. 7th Edition. 7th Edition. Tall quarto. Original color pictorial paper-covered boards, green cloth spine. Eight superb colored lithographs each with movable elements, all working with tab (some renewed), first plate gutter reinforced, light offsetting from pivot pins, a few small water stains to upper board. Housed in custom-made modern slipcase. The most beautiful of Meggendorfer’s four picture books using so-called “blinds:” “Meggendorfer created picture books for this transformation technique (blind technique) dealing with alternating picture states that are completely independent of one another whereby the transition process represents a sliding movement in itself, but as such it does not merge in a meaningful way with elements of the images, apart from the kaleidoscope effect that is deliberately abstract...” (Ries, Wilhelminische Zeit, p. 56 and p. 714, 102). A very scarce Meggendorfer title.
