1613
by [King James Bible]
1613. London: Robert Barker, 1613.
4to. [8] ff, inc. title within elaborate woodcut border. Genealogies A-D4 E2; First Book of Moses (A1) - 3D2 (with) Apocrypha; t/p New Testament (Barker 1614) 3D3-3S8; Concordances (Barker 1615) A-K8 L2..
Recently restored original calf with metal furniture, one metal cornerpiece missing, clasps gone, later rebacked and very recently lightly conserved with a small number of partially torn leaves repaired with little or no loss. A substantially complete and largely undamaged copy of a book very rarely found thus, with provenance and in an early binding. The two-page (or folding) map is not present, as often.
Signature at front in ink: "William Banting Jnr. February 1st 1853 his book". Early provenance includes a manuscript note on the verso of the New Testament t/p: "Bind this for Richard Maine of Crampton on Dingley, put in a Common Prayer and Psalms" and below "Robert Doctour his book 1721" and again dated 1722. Below that "Richard Maine His Book" (no date). Verso of the final Bible leaf: "Robert Doctour his book god give him grace thereon to look April ye 24 yr 1722",
ยง The first black-letter quarto edition of the King James Bible, quite scarce if anywhere near complete and this copy in an early binding with early manuscript provenance. "This and many subsequent issues were produced in close imitation of those black-letter quarto editions of the Geneva Bible which had proved so popular." Conforms with Darlow and Moule 323 (noting several variants). With the "she" reading in Ruth 3:15. (Inventory #: 126716)
