first edition Wraps (semi-stiff card). Stapled
1934 · Boston
by Cornell, Grace
Boston: Carter's Ink Company. Printer: Stetson Press, Boston, 1934. First Edition. Wraps (semi-stiff card). Stapled. Near Fine. An attractive and easily readable and accessible exegesis on color theory and poster and sign design -- how to effectively employ and choose color and typography. Obviously, a soft sell promotion by a major ink manufacturer. 8vo. 21.5 by 14 cm. 24 pp. 5,000 copies printed in 27 colors we are told on the last page. Five pages with full color, two other pages with some color, and four or five pages devoted entirely, or mostly, to typographic specimens. Cornell was a member of the staff at the Metropolitan Museum between 1917 and 1941 but that belies her significance in the art world. She was a popular lecturer, and a major thrust of her work or mission was elevating the use of art by industry. Carter's Ink's roots go back to 1858. It also manufactured pens, mechanical pencils and other writing tools. The company was acquired by Dennison in 1975. A modicum of dustiness on cover. A beautiful copy overall.
