by [World War II] [Women's Army Corp]
Various aspects of life for those in the Women's Army Corps (or the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps) at Camp Atterbury are seen in the 148 images housed in this album. Many of the snapshots show fellow WACs, as well as members of the post motor pool and the 591st Field Artillery Battalion, in early 1944. There are also images of WACs tending to victory gardens at the base, off duty house in the women's barracks, and an excursion to nearby Brendonwood.
Located four miles west of Edinburgh, Indiana, Camp Atterbury comprised over 40,000 acres when it was established on June 2, 1942, with 1,780 buildings providing housing to more than 40,000 officers and troops. Although WAC units accounted for a small percentage of the enlisted personnel on base, they performed a variety of essential duties, filling the roles of clerks, nurses, mail carriers, machinists, drivers, librarians, etc.
The album's creator is unknown, but many of the individuals pictured are identified in handwritten captions below the photographs. All the images, which measure 4" x 3" with a few smaller snapshots, are held in place on black paper leaves with photo corners. The leaves are bound with cord in flexible pebbled burgundy buckram covers. Especially fresh and clean, with a little wear to the bottom corner of the front panel. (Inventory #: 78729)
