1882 · Boston
by Slafter, Rev. Edmund F.
Boston: Privately Printed, 1882. "as recorded in the journals of the early writers, navigators and explorers relating to the Atlantic coast of North America." First and only edition of an odd and interesting work. Pages 5-10 contain an alphabetical listing of New England coastal sites, the latitude citation, the degree of error, and the published source from which this information was taken. This is followed by a discussion of how the inadequacies of the astrolabe and cross staff resulted in flawed measurements. Five years earlier Slafter published "Voyages of the Northmen to America," a summary of Icelandic sagas from the tenth and eleventh centuries, with historical evidence of where the Scandinavians landed in America. So this work fits in with his earlier study. Bound as issued in printed grey wrappers, which are chipped. Text clean. The front pastedown contains Slafter's complimentary greeting and the ownership plate of Harrison Horblitt, both are small printed labels. 23.5 cm. 20 pp. b/w illustration in text.
