'Indian Pictures' manuscript in ink at lower margin. Full length portrait of Kicking Bear (also known as Matho Wanahtaka) standing outdoors before covered wagon wearing western shirt, vest and traditional breechcloth. This image was taken shortly after Wounded Knee Massacre. George E. Trager (1861-1964) began photographing army officers and Dakota Indians at the Pine Ridge Reservation in March, 1890. He later formed a partnership with Joseph Ford to sell photographs of Pine Ridge, and founded the Northwestern Photographic Company in January, 1891.
