A monumental undertaking, completed over an eight-year span. Jennings' and Eiland's selection of Walter Benjamin's work, from his earliest published writings through the height of his intellectual and literary power in the late Thirties, represents (in the words of one reviewer), "...the first serious attempt to present his works with systematic chronology, judicious but inclusive selection, and sensitively accurate translation" (Peter Brier, Magill's Literary Annual, 2008). Complete sets in the first printings have become increasingly difficult to assemble; this set acquired from the estate of noted poet and translator Nathaniel Tarn, whose printed bookplate is on the front pastedown of three of the four volumes.
