Decorated with numerous gilt figures, as well as decorations and lettering. The boards are covered in green marbled paper. Top edges of the pages are gilt-covered. The other page edges are untrimmed. Illustrated. Vol. I: 433 pages of text, containing 56 biographies most of which are accompanied by fine engraved portraits. Vol. II: 405 pages of text, containing 69 biographies many of which are accompanied by fine engraved portraits. Minimal fading to leather of spine, and minimal shelfwear. Minor refurbishing to leather, including application of protective conservation wax. Offered for sale is the rare two volume extension/supplement of the initially published five volume set titled "Chicago: Its History and Its Builders. A Century of Marvelous Growth." The five volume set has the municipal "Y" shaped device/decoration stamped in gilt on the spine. However, the two volume supplement has the municipal device stamped in gilt on the front cover, with the spine stamped in gilt with a device depicting a goddess figure suited for battle, wearing a crown depicting a phoenix rising from the flames, and wearing a breastplate that reads "I Will" which was designed by Charles Holloway. This is a rival or alternative to Chicago's official motto "Urbs in Horto" (City in a Garden). Measures approximately 12.5 inches (315mm) (height).The text is clean and unmarked. First edition..
