Berlin: Verlag Junge Welt, 1986. Second Edition. Hardcover. Cloth spine. Heavy card boards. Fine. Surrealism and absurdism packaged for a juvenile in this wonderfully quirky book of not just anthropomorphic animals but also inanimate objects having agency and animation. Folio, 33 by 22 cm. Unpaginated, eight color plates, including front and rear cover. The two interior leaves are of a slightly thinner card stock than the cover, but these leaves too are of a rigid card. The color used is lurid and arresting -- perfect for a topsy turvy anarchic world. The style of illustration has a sleekness one can find in paintings of artists such as Leger, but the work was influenced undoubtedly by countless earlier Surrealists, Cubists, and other modernist artists. The crisp amusing captions, one or two lines, and if two lines, rhyming, fills in the little that isn't self-explanatory about the illustrations. Condition: the lightest of wear.
