This book belonged to Robert Gould Shaw Sr. [1776-1853], a wealthy Boston merchant and the grandfather of Civil War hero Robert Gould Shaw [1837-1863], Colonel of the 54th Massachusetts regiment who was killed during the assault on Battery Wagner, South Carolina.
Shaw Sr. signs on the front free endpaper: "Robt G. Shaw | 2 Octo. 1847." He signs again, with the same date, on page [iii]. (Inventory #: 41073)
