Both volumes of this two volume set are in very good- condition in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spines and on the front boards. The front and rear boards are decorated with a gilt, circular seal (3 inches in diameter) showing the profile of Grant on the front boards and the reverse of this medal on the rear boards. The image of the shoulder patch appears in gilt on the spines as well. Each volume is an octavo measuring 9 by 5 7/8 inches. The cloth at the heads and heels of the spines are worn and rubbed as are the tips of the boards and the lower edges of the boards. The hinges and joints for both volumes are tight and strong after the rear hinge of volume I was professionally repaired. Both volumes have a prior owner's book plate designed by Rockwell Kent. Not only was this title considered a major publishing success, it has often been considered one of the most important books of American history. Volume I contains 584 pages and volume II contains 647 pages including an index for both volumes and this is followed by an errata page. Illustrated with engraved frontispieces, maps, engravings, two fold-out facsimile letters in Grant's hand in each volume.
