Venice: Bernardino Stagnino for Giovanni Giolitto da Trino, 1536. THIRD STAGNINO EDITION (1st 1512). Hardcover. Fine. Bound in early limp vellum, soiled, with modern endpapers (a remboîtage). A very good copy with some blemishes and minor defects as follows: minor damp-staining to gatherings AA, CC and B (2nd seq.), small marginal stain to lvs. G7-8; light oil stain to lower corner of gatherings BB and A, and to lvs. X8-Y2. Very slight worming in the margins of gatherings AA, DD, PP, SS and QQ, slightly affecting the headline in gatherings DD. Gathering QQ toned, bifolium A3-6 (final sequence) supplied, E7-8 (final sequence) with a tape repair along outer margin. Illustrated with a woodcut portrait of Dante on the title page, a full-page woodcut at the beginning of the Inferno, and numerous small woodcut illustrations throughout the text. The woodcuts, first used in Stagnino’s edition of 1512, are based on those in the 1491 Venetian edition of Benalius and Capcasa.

The full-paged woodcut shows three scenes: 1. Dante wandering in the dark wood “la selva oscura”, 2. Dante beset by the lion, leopard and wolf, and 3. Dante led by Virgil.

With the important commentary of Cristoforo Landino (1424-98) and with corrections to both the Landino commentary and the text of the Commedia by Pietro da Figino (Pietro Mazzanti da Figline). In addition to the Commedia, this edition includes Dante’s Italian verse paraphrases of the Pater Noster, Ave Maria and the Creed. (Inventory #: 5175)
