by Bessie, Alvah
New York: The Macmillan Company. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1965). First Edition. Hardcover. [the book has only a teensy bit of wear at a couple of corners; the jacket is very nice as well, slightly faded at the spine and with some short diagonal creasing at the top corners of both flaps]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the title page: "For Max, who remembers / it all / Alvah Bessie / 1971." One of the better "Hollywood Ten" memoirs, by the screenwriter who served with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War, before he ever got into the movies. Taped to the front endpaper in this copy is an interested typed note from Bessie, addressed to "Dear Agent" and inquiring about several matters related to his novel "The Symbol." The note ends with: "When are you summoning me to Lotosland [sic] to write something for that strange outfit who employs you? HUH?" -- and is signed "Yours, Alta Bajo, Fyodr." [The "Yours" and "Fyodr" are typed.] Signed by Author . (Inventory #: 30080)
