ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Maggie Taylor (b. 1961) is an American digital artist known for her dreamlike, surreal photo collages that blend antique imagery with contemporary digital techniques. Raised in Florida and trained in philosophy at Yale and photography at the University of Florida, Taylor constructs intricate visual narratives using flatbed scanners, Photoshop, and a trove of vintage objects—such as 19th-century portraits, feathers, clocks, and lace. Her muted, aged color palette evokes a nostalgic, otherworldly feel. A pioneer in digital photomontage since the 1990s, she diverged early from traditional darkroom methods—unlike her first husband, photographer Jerry Uelsmann. Taylor’s work has been widely exhibited and collected, appearing in institutions such as the Fogg Art Museum, the George Eastman House, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Her books include Landscape of Dreams, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Internal Logic. More recently, she has begun incorporating AI tools like Midjourney into her creative process. Known for inviting viewers into her visually cohesive and emotionally evocative scenes, Taylor focuses less on explaining her art and more on sparking imagination and introspection.
