1922
by Cather, Willa
1922. [this copy in wrappers] New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1922. Original blue-grey wrappers printed in black.
"Third Printing" per the title verso and per the spine of the book -- but actually the second printing according to bibliographer Crane (Knopf's initial printing consisted of a 345-copy "limited issue" plus a trade issue, but he labeled them as two separate printings) -- all three of these "printings" effected in September 1922. Being in fact the second printing, this copy still has the WWI "errors" that were not corrected until the next printing. Willa Cather won (in its sixth year) the 1923 Pulitzer Prize for this tale of Claude Wheeler, born on a farm in Nebraska, who, immersed in the drudgery of farming and of marriage to a Christian missionary, is unable to find meaning in his life -- so he enlists in the Army and winds up on the battlefields of 1918 France... It is based largely upon Cather's cousin Grosvenor Cather, who grew up on the farm adjacent to her family's, and died in the Great War (it is said that Cather learned of his death from reading a magazine in a hair salon). This copy is bound in blue-grey wrappers, with the same print that appeared on the trade dust jacket. We find no record of this binding in the Crane bibliography. It is in very good-plus condition, with minor wear at the ends and edges of the spine. Crane A11.a.i (no mention of this binding). (Inventory #: 15750)
