by (PUBLISHER'S DUMMY). BARRIE, J. M.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. 240 x 150 mm. (9 3/8 x 5 7/8"). [18] leaves.
Publisher's holland-backed brown paper boards, gilt Peter Pan emblem on upper cover, smooth spine, patterned endpapers. With seven photogravure plates, all with tissue guards. Rear pastedown with sample natural linen spine with a printed paper label. As new.
This very well-preserved publisher's prospectus is for a desirable edition of the works of J. M. Barrie. It advertises the 1,030-copy "Peter Pan" limited edition of Barrie's works, which the publisher tells us here is "as nearly perfect as the art of the printer and binder can make it." It was common in 19th century America for publishers to employ canvassers to sell subscriptions door-to-door for forthcoming publications using a prospectus or "dummy" like this one, containing specimen text, illustrations, and often choices for various offered bindings, all intended to encourage people to pre-order it. Such prospectuses for books published in the last 100 years are less frequently seen on the market. The present example must have seen very little sales use, if any, since it remains in virtually pristine condition.. (Inventory #: ST20533)
