Discourses on Religious Subjects ... to which are prefixed, Sketches of His Life and Character and a Sermon, Preached at West-Rutland, on the Occasion of His Death by the Rev. Lemuel Haynes. 300p. Old, probably contemporay leather. 18 cm. No titling on backstrip or elsewhere on the cover. Binding intact but heavily scuffed and rubbed. Former owner's name {"Solomon Nelson" Fairfield) written in whole or part several times on endpapers. Rear pastedown chipped and mostly missing around edges exposing the folded leather. Contents sound with some aging and minor rippling. Swift was a Congregational minister at verious churches in Massachusetts and Vermont who also served as trustee for three local college (Williams, Middlebury an Dartmouth. He was the first minster at the church in Manchester, VT (1783-1785; Haynes, an African American, served as that church's seventh minister (1818-1822). What is decribed as the "substance" of Haynes' sermon is printed on pages 23-32. The Subscriber's Names list at pages 294-300 includes Lenuel Haynes who is shown as subscribing for 12 copies.
