Howell on the front pastedown. Scarce. Frederic Henry Balfour (1806-1909) was a British expatriot editor, essayist, author, and avid sinologist who lived in Shanghai. He served as editor of the "North-China Herald" and was the author of "Waifs and Strays from the Far East" and "Idiomatic Dialogues in the Peking Colloquial.
