[Sci-Fi] [Zines] Early sci-fi zine from Leeds, UK, 1938. The Scientifictionaleodensian, Vol. 1, No. 2 (November 1938). Two pages, one sheet double-sided. Mimeographed British science fiction fan publication produced by the Leeds Branch of the Science-Fiction Association, published one year before the start of World War II. A rare prewar fan periodical documenting early science fiction fan culture in the UK. Tthis issue captures the culture of regional clubs, amateur film screenings, lecture gatherings, and speculative discussion among science fiction readers outside the United States. Notable for its proto-cosplay references, detailed member characterizations, and firsthand accounts of British fan activities at the close of the interwar period.
Issued from 34 Reginald Street, Bradford, by editor Albert Griffiths, this issue opens with a detailed "Branch Report" from the Leeds SFA’s October meeting. Highlights include an atmospheric description of the screening of The White Hell of Pitz Palu, noted for its newly synchronized musical accompaniment by Dobby and Marsden. The anonymous second-page narrative, signed only “a Leeds member,” presents a rich impressionistic portrait of the club meeting—describing pipe smoke, makeshift knobs, and lively science fiction debate among “goggle-eyed members.” Includes an “Important Announcement” about the annual Branch group photograph and plans for future screenings and lectures, including presentations by Arthur C. Clarke and viewings of Fritz Lang’s Spies and Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Brittle paper with edge chipping, creases, and minor tears; light fading throughout. Fragile, but fully legible and structurally intact.
A scarce surviving artifact from the earliest phase of Science fiction fan culture, offering a vivid, firsthand window into prewar literary tastes, social rituals, and imagined futures. No holdings traced in OCLC or major institutional catalogs. (Inventory #: 22385)
